Air Quality Monitoring in Denver: University of Colorado Boulder's SJEQ-D Study

Public Research: Case Studies

The Social Justice & Environmental Quality in Denver (SJEQ-D) study, conducted by the University of Colorado Boulder's research team, examines the impact of local reconstruction and neighborhood redevelopment on the well-being of residents in Denver's Globeville, Elyria-Swansea, Cole, and Clayton neighborhoods.

Residents were provided with Atmotube air pollution monitors to track the concentration of air pollutants, both inside their homes and outdoors. Additionally, the research team supplied mitigation measures, such as air purifiers, to residents when air pollution levels were found to be high.

Shelly Miller, a professor of mechanical engineering at CU Boulder and the project's principal investigator, shares:

"Our multi-pronged approach has enabled us to understand the community members' concerns and their needs for additional support. Our team combines expertise in computer science and air quality science.”

Shivakant Mishra, a professor in the Computer Science Department at the University of Colorado Boulder, explains:

"The poorer the air quality or the noise pollution, the less happy the people are.”
